Desert Hot Springs

In 1913, when there were 100,000 acres of desert land open with no roads, Cabot Yerxa arrived in the Desert Hot Springs area. He established a 160-acre homestead near the Two Bunch Palms. First, he built the Eagles Nest Cabin on the crown of Miracle Hill with just a little help from Merry Xmas, his mule. Later, when he returned from serving in World War I, Yerxa built a 35-room adobe in Hopi Indian-style architecture.

During his life, Yerxa coaxed L.W. Coffee (said to be the originator, founder and developer of Desert Hot Springs) into developing the land around his adobe structure. The historic building – now known as Cabot’s Old Indian Pueblo Museum – still exists today as a fitting monument to Yerxa’s faith and love for this beautiful desert community.

Desert Hot Springs today remains famous for its hot mineral springs, but is developing into much more than just an interesting tourist attraction. While tourism is still the area’s top industry, city residents enjoy a wide range of activities. Hiking, golf, tennis, shuffleboard, sightseeing, bicycle riding, ballooning and horseback riding are all within easy reach of the Desert Hot Springs community.

The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway takes riders 8,516 feet above the desert floor to the Mount San Jacinto State Park and Wilderness, where numerous other recreational pastimes are available. Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs and El Paseo in Palm Desert are two nearby boutique districts. Cultural venues include Palm Springs Desert Museum, Annenberg Theatre, McCallum Theatre (Bob Hope Cultural Center), and the Living Desert.

In addition to this wide variety of attractions, the community boasts an ideal location in the Coachella Valley. Desert Hot Springs is about two hours away from both Los Angeles and San Diego. Residents enjoy convenient access to interstates 10 and 15 as well as Palm Springs International Airport.

Students in Desert Hot Springs attend schools within the Palm Springs Unified School District. There are four elementary schools, one middle school and one high school within the community. The district is dedicated to providing “each student with the most appropriate educational opportunities in a safe, secure environment, so that all students can achieve their full potential as contributing members of the community.”
